Description

Character design for Sister Mercy as follows from the Art of Brian Bolland

Pat Mills and John Wagner were thinking about an idea for a character that I could draw that we could retain the ownership on.. Basically Sister Mercy was a female Judge Dredd operating, not in a neo fascist futuristic megalopolis but in a neo-fascist theocratic futuristic megalopolis. She was going to be a nun that you don�t wanna mess with. I came up with the design. John said she only looked half dressed. He was right, of course. This was as far as we got.

Have Mercy! This package of 80's fashion would have ran counter to the religious fervor trying to shut down pervasive sexuality and violence. It might have been more acceptable and made more sense if she was an android who was unaware of her own image. Bolland's classic designs provide a great opportunity to witness his behind the scenes imagination.

That's a cracking design page! Love the contrast of the dynamic loose pencils with those crisp inks. Bags of character!
