Which comes first , the cover or the commission ? That variation on the "the chicken or the egg ?" question is one of the one I get most asked about by CAF'ers about the Re-Legion series..

Truthfully in most cases, its a classic cover that inspires the commission but every so often, the image comes first. Case in point, this Dream Girl : Infinite Timelines cover, which has as its centerpiece a stunning image of Nura Nal of Naltor by Mike Grell.

I discovered the Legion when Mike Grell was their artist. Those crazy covers and sexy costumes got me hooked. First Legion, like first love always stays with you.

So when I saw this pencil piece( image below ) by Mike Grell up on Ebay, I wanted it for two reasons.In and of itself it showcases Mike Grell's talents as a penciller but it could also be used as a launching pad for an Infinite Timelines commission.

The premise was easy, Dream Girl's power is to fortell the future in dreams , so we would surround her with strange images. The next step was figuring out her dreams.

Drawing upon DC/Marvel covers that included such classics as; Superman Issue 243, Justice League of America Issue 220 and Marvel Two-In-One Issue 63 we came up with strong images. John Watson agreed to take on the task of creating the dreams.

Each of these dreams will unfold in the Infinite Timelines. Sharp-eyed viewers of the Infinite Timelines Gallery and Series can see that the Ferro Lad images ties directly into Trevor Von Eeden's Metallic Messiah storyline.

The other two gives us glimpses into other stories I have plotted out called
" The Time Trappers Wife " featuring Duo Damsel and "The Ancestral Agenda" featuring among others The Tornado Twins..

John Watson who is a huge Mike Grell fan himself used the cover of Psi-Force issue 9, and respectfully blended all these images together into a stunning cover that is AMAZING.

He also introduced me to a friend of his Russel Payne, who helped with logo's & finishes. Russ was so enthusiastic that he presented me with 3 ( the other two are below ) images to choose from.

This was a long process that involved quite a few folks pulling it all together. In a way, it echoes the Legion ethos of teamwork. I am thrilled with the results. John's work is fantastic. Mike Grell is simply a legend and this will not be the last time, I utilize the skill set of Russ Payne. I recommend them to one and all.

It's like we don't even need DC anymore. We Legion fans get everything we need from you. Just charge a nickle a peak and you'll be set for life.

It would take quite a few nickles & dimes to keep me in the manner I am accustomed to..but since this is a labor of love, it will always be FREE. I am thrilled how this piece turned out.
