DescriptionI used to go to the Forbidden Planet when I was a teen visiting England, so I am excited to acquire one of the pieces that Brian Bolland did for the store. He did a few of these - the most memorable were for the bags that I often had filled with comics from a visit but those eluded me. This was part of what was a great 4Q22 CAL!! Bill selected this in CAF #123. I only identified 6 of 10 characters correctly but you can see those who assisted me in the comments. Clockwise from bottom right: Wonder Woman, Dr. Who, Nosferatu, Martian citizen from The Angry Red Planet, Robby the Robot, Gollum, Tucana Galactica, Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera, Rondo Hatton, and in the middle Gwylim Griffiths from Outer Limits. Entered in Best of 2022 under Media Artwork, earned 41 votes for 7th place, not bad! Social/Sharing |

Wow, this brings back memories for me as well. Vintage Brian Bolland. That is, I think, Gollum from the Ralph Bakshi version of LOTR, as you identify, and the far right is, I think, Rondo Hatton who had acromegaly and whose looks seem to have inspired The Creep by John Arcudi from Dark Horse Comics. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely Rondo Hatton, whose likeness also featured in one of Bolland's memorable Dredd stories back in 1978 (The Face-change Crimes, Prog 52).

Of course, I remember that Judge Dredd story now. The reptilian creature on far left looks like, but not quite, a Silurian from Dr Who, Jon Pertwee era. Ahhh, what a trip down memory lane.

The four-eyed alien lady is a Tucana from the original Battestar Galactica TV series (looked familiar but couldn't immediately place her but a quick Google helped). Lovely piece, Mark!

This is the piece that proves that CAF Live had great deals and not only flip of the day fishing expeditions.

Mark, surprised that no one mentioned this yet, but the big-domed fella dead center is from an episode of The Outer Limits titled "The Sixth Finger." This was a character who was a miner-turned-evolutionary-freak and portrayed by David McCallum, of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. fame.

I also loved to visit Forbidden Planet when I was in London. So I really enjoyed seeing this cool catalogue cover by Brian Bolland! Bolland, of course, has become one of the greats in the comic art world and deservedly so. What a great pick-up!
