Description

Batman Special #1 (June 1984). "The Player on the Other Side", story by Mike W. Barr, and a really excellent one at that.

As I understand it, Batman Special #1 was to have been inked entirely by Michael Golden, inking chores handed over to Mike DeCarlo only when deadline pressures loomed. Although the majority of the book is inked by DeCarlo, several pages throughout the book feature inking by Golden himself these first few pages among them.

For page one (shown here) Golden inked the figures in panel 1 and the cop (young James Gordon) in panel 2. DeCarlo inked the other figures in panel 2, with Gary Martin (who also worked on at least page 12) inking backgrounds and laying in zips in both panels. Another inker may have been involved in the background inking of this issue, but like Martin went uncredited as the credits had already been lettered by the time they were recruited to help finish the book.

I have yet another great inker to thank: John Dell, who kindly sold me this and the two pages that follow.

Love the behind the scenes info on these pages...ashame he couldn't have inked the whole book.. it would have been amazing!
