DescriptionWhen I learned of Michael Golden doing commissions from my buddy John Fanucchi, I was beside myself.I contacted Renee Witterstaetter, sent a check and basically said that whatever Michael wanted to do would be fine by me. I've been a huge fan of Golden's work starting from the late 70's and I've loved all of it. (I saw no reason to hamstring the man with a specific request.) I suppose by giving him such total freedom I left myself open to getting just about anything and could've ended up with a landscape or a drawing of a bowl of fruit. But I had faith, patiently waited, and over time my anticipation grew and grew. What would he do? I didn't really care, I just wanted "something" and knew he wouldn't disappoint. Well, it came together for me about a month ago at Big Wow 2012. I don't know how Golden knew I was such a huge fan of Kirby's monsters, let alone that my very favorite was Fin Fang Foom. There was nothing in my gallery to suggest any of this so I reckon I'll chalk it up to serendipity. The end result is so far beyond what I could have hoped for, exceeding my expectations by light years. It was exciting just stealing glimpses of this coming together in penciled form over Saturday afternoon and later in the week when the inked piece arrived in the mail I was stunned. I can still hardly believe it. I first read the Lee & Kirby classic as a reprint in Where Monsters Dwell, and when I look at this I feel like a ten year old kid again. This has such a groovy Kirby vibe and yet still has all the earmarks of a Golden original. My heartfelt thanks to Renee for setting this up and undying gratitude to Michael for going above and beyond. I was already a fan for life but now...? Well, ecstatic doesn't quite cover it. This is so cool. The piece sings out pre hero Kirby and backs it up with a Golden touch. Congrats to you, JH

I concur with a few of the above posters... easily one of his best 'Modern' commissions, and that's coming from someone who's felt critical of his recent commission work. Something sparked his interest with this one. Love the hapless soldiers in the lower right.
