DescriptionWow.I have to post the whole story on how I was fortunate enough to get a piece by TWO of the great masters. A few years back, John Romita Jr. was scheduled to be at a convention in Toronto. I fired an email to the Godfather (aka Spencer Beck) and asked if there was a chance, any chance, that John could do a piece that I could grab at the show. I started reading Spider-Man during the Stern/Romita Jr. run. I loved John's work on the X-Men and the Punisher as well. But, to me, the Nocenti/Romita Jr/Williamson DD holds a special place in my heart, so I went with Daredevil. Spencer set it up. But then, John had a personal issue and couldn't make the show! And, as he's one of the busiest, and, all-time kings of reliability, his full time job of comic bok artist took over. The beauty of dealing with Spencer, of course, is that you need not worry about anything. Fast forward to last year's New York con (which I didn't attend!) and Spencer calls to say "John is done the Daredevil and it's fantastic. You have any interest in getting it inked?" "Inked?" I honestly had not even thought of it - but, obviously I said yes. Here, to me, is where the story gets really exciting! (Yeah, b/c a JR Jr commission isn't exciting enough!) Spencer says he can line up Scott Hanna or Dan Green or Klaus Janson but asks me who I'd like. I say "Can you ask John?" About 45 minutes pass, phone rings again and the question is "How about his Dad?" At that point we talked price and I honestly said I probably couldn't do it, and Spencer said he'd call Klaus Janson and then I could figure out which path I wanted to go. The next day, I sat in my office all day and did the thought process. John Romita. He took over for Steve Ditko for God's sake. He RAN the art department at Marvel for decades. He, legitimately, is a master of the craft and I had a chance to get him involved in a commission? The phrase "...once in a lifetime..." went through my head, and I emailed Spencer and gave the go ahead. I've had this piece sitting in my den for a week and I just can't stop looking at it. Thank you John. Thank you John. Thank you Spencer. Social/Sharing |

That's about the coolest thing that I've ever seen or heard. To say that I'm jealous is an understatement. I could look at 1,000 versions of JRJR drawing DD running across rooftops and never get bored. You've got a true treasure there, sir!

Great story, wonderful commission. John Romita Sr. really defined the look of DD for almost twenty years with his 7 issue run.

Perfection. A terrific example of how a penciler and inker can complement each other. Looking at it, it's clear that is a JRJR drawing, but it's equally obvious that Romita Sr inked it. LOVE it!

Stunning! Always a treat to see them working together on something this cool. I don't know what it cost, but whatever you paid, you got a steal on it. Priceless.
