DescriptionSerene Zulli Sandman that I’m overjoyed to add to my collection. To my knowledge this is unpublished, do correct me if you know differently, or can give insight as to when exactly it was created, and based on the ha.com description from 03/24 I suspect it may have been created by Michael Zulli for Neil Gaiman, perhaps a gift, or personal commission; but that’s just speculation on my part. Regardless it is a large mixed media beauty, by one of the great Sandman delineators, that will soon have an honored place on my wall.03/14/2025 The piece arrived today, and I opted to remove the piece from the "custom" Michael's framing job that literally had the painting directly pushed up against the metal frame. There is some marginal scuffing/scraping damage as a result of the frame to paint friction; but all in all it seems to have faired well despite the poor framing job. Nice to see all of the SANDMAN title at the top, and to have vanquished the black bar of the two butting frames across the middle. I may eventually opt to custom frame it as a single piece; but for now this is more than adequate, and a huge improvement in my opinion. The copper catching the light is a delight! Also, I finally noticed Zulli’s trademark MZ signature logo at the center below Dream’s feet. Comiclink description: ComicLink Comments: Michael Zulli, a very talented artist who sadly passed away last July, is best known for his work on Neil Gaiman's iconic title The Sandman. Zulli's work on The Sandman included #13, the classic Hob Gadling story and #72-#74, the climactic saga "The Wake". This original painted art features a portrait of the Sandman himself, Dream of the Endless. It's executed in gouache and metallics on two separately framed wood planks. About the Artist Since gaining wide acclaim for his work with writer Neil Gaiman on The Sandman series, artist Michael Zulli has stood as one of the unique visionaries in Modern comic art. Besides his work on The Sandman, Zulli is probably best known for Alice Cooper: The Last Temptation, also written by Gaiman. Zulli passed away in 2024 at the age of 71. About The Sandman Originally published between 1989 and 1996 for 75 issues, The Sandman is one of most important comic book series in the history of the medium. It was one of the first to demonstrate the literary merits of graphic storytelling. The series generated a huge cross-over audience of fantasy readers and has remained a best-seller in its various collection formats to this day. The Sandman is the story of Dream, one of seven members of the Endless, a family of immortal siblings who are eons old and operate as anthropomorphic personifications of various metaphysical entities. Dream and his sister, the personification of Death portrayed as a young goth woman, struck a chord with fans and turned The Sandman into a publishing phenomenon. The Sandman was finally adapted for live-action in 2022 with an incredible first season on Netflix that adapted the first 19 issues of the series. A second season was announced in April of 2023 and is currently in production. HA.COM description: Michael Zulli - Sandman Painting Original Art Group of 2 (undated). The King of Dreams levitates in rich colors by master illustrator Michael Zulli, who entered the Sandman title as a guest penciller for Neil Gaiman's story "Men of Good Fortune" in Issue #13, which introduced the Hob Gadling character (Hob made an acclaimed live-action debut in the hit Netflix Sandman series episode of the same story name). Zulli would eventually illustrate seven Sandman issues, including the final Sandman story arc "The Wake". Produced in gouache and metallics on two separately framed wood planks, and when hung together, they make an overall size of 27" x 15". One of the copper buckles in the lower area of Dream is coming loose. Otherwise the art is in Very Good condition. Accompanied by a hand-signed COA. From the Personal Collection of Neil Gaiman. I like the stained-glass window effect and all the other creative touches Zulli employed to create this unique Sandman image.

Hi Timothy, thanks for the comment. The piece arrived, and as you can see I've removed it from the frame, and you can now see more of it! Enjoy!
