DescriptionSignificant Spidey Week continues!Amazing Spider-Man #400. It was quite the anniversary issue. It began with Aunt May suddenly waking up from her coma. Yayy! Later, in one of the most beautiful and emotional moments in Spidey history, Aunt May revealed to Peter (in a very loving way) that she had known for a quite while that he was Spider-Man. I was SO happy to be able to acquire the two pages where this moment took place. Because when I bought the comic off the rack in 1995 and read those pages, I was floored. Aunt May knows! And then Aunt May died!! So incredibly sad!! Of course, three years later in Spider-Man #97 & Spectacular Spider-Man #263, Peter found out that the real Aunt May had been kidnapped by Norman Osborn well before her sudden recovery and "death," and she had been replaced by another woman who had been infused with Aunt May's genetic matrix. An actress! An actress who believed this to be her greatest role! She pretended to know Peter's identity and then (though this was NOT in her contract) actually died. All for the amusement of the Green Goblin. That Norman Osborn. He has messed with poor Spidey's mind so many times, it's amazing that Peter is not wrapped up in a strait jacket and drooling in the corner of some padded cell somewhere. But still, even knowing all that crazy stuff, the issue still tugs at the ol' heart strings. I figure that in one of the many alternate Marvel Universes, that moment happened in a very real way, with a very real Aunt May. Social/Sharing |

Fake parents, fake aunts, clones, skrulls...I figured by now Peter just assumes everyone he meets is an alter ego!

This is just nostalgia overload for me. No splashy Spidey suit or webslinging action needed. Just pure raw talent by Bagley and amazing inks to match.

Oh, classic!!!! I LOVE this moment. I remember reading this and thinking "FINALLY, after 400 issues of ASM history, she finally knows and has known for a long time!". So poignant, and of COURSE Pauly P owns it! Congrats, man. As for the follow up story, I did what I've always done when Marvel ruined a good story by trying to tell readers not to believe what came before: I put it out of my mind and the newer, terrible idea/story is the one that for me doesn't exist.

What an amazing dramatic scene between Peter and his Aunt May! Definitely another level of storytelling in Spidey history! Congrats!

Remember this moment distinctly as well as the rest of the book. Landmark 400th issue with the tombstone cover! She knew. Shew knew?! Well, not really :) But yeah, a key moment that knocked me for a loop. But behind this lies something sinister orchestrated by none other than Norman. Whew. Yup, this dude has messed with Pete SO much. But what about Harry?! At least Norman respected Pete, in a way. But I digress! Great pages - congrats!

You acquired two grails here from milestone issue 400, and noneless from one of poignant moments in Spidey history on several levels like you reminded us of. Huge congrats for those two gems. Try and leave some to us poor Bags fans now, for a change. ;-)

This was a wonderful sequence. I think Amazing Spider-Man #400 was the only Spidey book to ever bring a tear to my eyes. Of course, they undid it later because no death in comics is permanent. But at the time this issue came out, we didn't know that.
