DescriptionBack in 1971 Jim Steranko contacted Basil Wolverton and requested a drawing and additional biography information from Basil Wolverton that he planned to use in an upcoming addition of the Steranko History of Comics. Unfortunately Steranko only completed two volumes of the History and the section that featured Spacehawk by Wolverton was never published. Please see the corresponding letters from Steranko to Wolverton for the request and thank you for the drawing on his Supergraphics company letterhead. I did manage to find an image (not original art) of the drawing that Wolverton completed for Steranko as it so clearly shows that Wolverton used the suggestions by Steranko in the completed piece. Once again I do not have the original Wolverton art but am showing an image of it as comparison. Crazy the stuff that occasionally shows up on eBay. I was delighted when I received the Steranko sketch and letters not knowing until I received it that it was sent by Monte Wolverton (the artist's son). Mr. Steranko validated the artwork as his at a show in Portland in 2017. Mr. Steranko was kind enough to sign the sketch using his 'block lettering signature' at the Southern California Comic Show on 01/26/20 Social/Sharing |

This was posted on a blog a few years ago and after showing it to Steranko (in an email), he told me that many of the full page spreads in the 2 Volumes of The History of Comics and The Superhero Calaendar (where the Wolverton drawing was published) , were based of layouts he created.

Thanks for the additional information...I appreciate it. I am not surprised that Steranko did a lot of the layouts for The History of Comics. Someday more may surface like this one did.
