I approached Mike Maclan based on him being an "All-Star Squadron" artist, and was going to have him do a fake cover for "The Freedom Brigade", my Standard Comics WWII era team ostensibly published in the 80's. Nothing was quite gelling, then I was looking through some of his "Men of Mystery" covers and had an idea. As a kid, I liked looking through the Overstreet Price Guide for all the pictures of those "mysterious" WWII covers I would never own. I particularly liked ones like the some of the alternate covers below, with the hero bursting in on some evil Nazis and their depraved ghouls about to torture or kill some innocent person.

I've done a bunch of Silver and Bronze Age type of covers, but haven't tackled one that would ostensibly have come out in the 1940s.

I thought that could be fun - Nazis are the ultimate evil, there are the ghoulish grotesque henchmen, the lady in peril, the hero arriving to save the day, etc. I think the head bad guy really needed to be a Nazi in full gear, either Gestapo or SS, as these comics would of course be very patriotic things and the hero I'm using here "actually" operated in occupied Europe against the Nazis - Nedor's The Grim Reaper.

So, I set up the basic idea with the request that it be slightly "grotesque", the kind of thing kids love and their moms hate. Obviously, Alex Schomburg covers were a big inspiration. And, voila! Pretty sweet.

I think that's Nedor's Doc Strange making a sneak-on appearance in the lower right. :-)
