DescriptionKamandi 16 is one of the most formally sophisticated comics of the 70's. Kirby uses a parallel narrative structure to answer one of the great questions of the Kamandi universe: How did the animals become intelligent? Rather than just have a character recount this narrative, Kirby has it happen AGAIN, in Kamandi's present, and sets up a rich potential future for humanity to rise again. Pages 2 and 3 comprise one of Jack's great single panels (see additional image). In an audacious linear composition that evokes a long tracking shot, Kamandi—armed, free, and articulate—stalks past cages of feral humans. These howling, gibbering homo-sapiens have been captured by Gorilla scientists for use as test subjects in a Bio-chemical research facility. This is the quintessential Kamandi situation. He's not LITERALLY the last boy on earth, but he's the last one we would recognize as one of us. As the book unfolds, we meet the Gorilla scientist Hanuman, who has recreated the mind-expanding chemical Cortexin, working from the notes of the human scientist who first discovered it. The journal entries of the long dead scientist are used as captions over the remaining action. His chance to study the chemical under controlled conditions is lost due to the advancing bombardment of the Tiger military (in the present)/ Great Disaster (in the past), and the catalytic drug spills into the water supply to trigger the development of consciousness in the wild humans, just as it had accidentally released the potential of the apes and other species so many years before. At the climax of the Tiger assault, cannon fire wrecks the animal cages and the gorgeous control of pages 2-3 pays off in a single page splash of utter chaos.Social/Sharing |

This is a wonderfully dense splash that the King, as he always did, has it working perfectly as a visual narrative that doesn't confuse. A great page Aaron, with your wonderful and very detailed synopsis.

As a true genius, Kirby always improved his art and reinvented himself. Big congrats Aaron!
