Description
I've already written about how this splash works narratively, in my write up on page 16 of this issue elsewhere in my Kirby gallery. That's not why I like it so much though. As an artist myself, I cannot overstress how good a drawing I think this is. The play between the flat grid of bars--so much like panel margins--and the roiling activity behind them makes it the most visually hypnotic page in my collection. At first the row of cells looks flat and centerless, like a Jackson Pollock, then you start looking into the chaos and you discover there's actually more structure and depth of field behind the bars than in front of them. If you assume, as I do, that Jack had to notice the multi-panel effect as he was drawing it, then, in a sense, Kamandi has become the reader of a life-sized experimental comic, one that features a comprehensive portrait of wild humanity as well as quite a lot of the panel-breaking effect that Simon & Kirby comics were noted for in the Golden Age. If this interpretation is reasonable, then perhaps it joins my other Kamandi DPS, from issue 4, in having a formally self-referential aspect. If that's going too far, though, I still think it's awfully good comics.

You can definitely say that Kirby poured his all into this imaginative work.  His passion and dedication as a storyteller on full display with something for the eyes to feast upon filling in every square.

I love that we start with "B."  I have looked at this a long time and could look a lot longer. I'm very happy you got this, Aaron; this is a huge piece.

Difficult to beat this one artistically . Kirby could still surprise in the mid '70s!

Fabulous DPS!  Intereating observations in your write-up as well.  It's amazing how well the crazy scene in the background reads despite the gridwork and the small scale of all the squirming, half-occluded figures compared with the overall image.  Kirby & Royer judiciously simplified their figures and faces and perfectly spotted their blacks to get this to work

I coveted this when I saw it up for auction, but it's out of my current budget. It's perfectly at home in your fantastic collection, though.

Phenomenal! What a cool DPS from Jack Kirby! I love your observation that the bars of the cells are like the margins in a comic book and that each square is like the art for a panel. That thought just blows my mind. I never would of thought of it, but now that you mention it, I can't not see it. Brilliant!

Wow, pure Kirby magic - this is fantastic! I feel like I am looking at a voracious pack of Kirby zombies trying to break through an get art the art. I think I can see myself emerging from the back in cell D. Congrats - this is a glorious example in your top shelf collection!
