DescriptionSometimes you get offered the kind of art you really have to wait for to show up, and then you must do whatever it takes to get it. This is one of those rare pieces. Twice up, vintage 1974 i believe, Kirby's marvelous creation the Silver Surfer really soars here. Hard to photograph the great pencil work, yet it's really breathtaking in person, full of nuance and depth. It doesn't get better than this for me. The peak of Kirby's Marvel work was the FF and the Silver Surfer. I can't wait for the Surfer to be featured in a Marvel film, soaring the cosmos. Until then and even after, I have this.Social/Sharing |

Very cool! You are on a roll. Never seen this before. Curious about the date--is there a clue on the art that indicates 1974 as the year of creation?

From Jack's hand to the page ... and eventually to your collection. Quite a journey and I can tell you are thrilled with the destination. This is pure Kirby gold. Congrats!

Always dug this since I saw the Thibodeaux lightboxing. It's got a lot of energy and the angle is SO WEIRD it's one of those things where Jack just suddenly opened up a whole new way of looking at the Surfer, casually, like "yeah, no big deal, here's how perspective works now. I'm Jack Kirby. Deal with it." I pegged it as a 1981 piece (given HA's description and the thickness of the line) -- how did you land on 1974 as a date?

Hi, Mike T lightboxed a copy as a tryout in the early 80s of course. Previous owner got the piece from Jack around 1981 and I asked about time frame- he said Jack said it was from around 1974, and he thought it was accurate. So I used his date.

I was going to say this is epic beyond belief, but would anyone have expected anything less from the King?
Wonderful acquisition!

Love seeing Kirby's pencils like this. The blacks have so much more depth and the figures feel more like they're in motion. Fabulous acquisition!
