Description

Star Spangled War Stories title page to "MIDWAY" with art by Fred Carrillo. Page #1 of the story. This was the Naval Battle that changed the course of the War in the Pacific during WW2. Study the history of this and you will find out how many heroic acts took place by brave men, many who knew their actions were almost suicidal. I had the treasure of an experience to meet and interview Ensign George Gay, the sole survivor of Torpedo Squadron #8, who launched from the carrier Hornet to attack the Japanese navy, knowing in advance that the torpedoes they were using were only 10 percent effective.
Not a typo...9 out of 10 torpedos would likely not detonate on contact. These brave warriors knew this, and went anyway.
