George, this is one great example of an exceptional artist who doesn't get enough love. Outstanding!
Steve.....That is an amazing 3rd panel. You have an excellent eye for these goodies... Congrats !
You have a very positive outlook on life....Good for you!
I have a similar illustration he did featuring a woman holding a "magic scythe" in my CAF. Not the same woman, I think, but here's the link if you want to take a look:
Congrats on this piece. Likely used in a RPG book, which he did art for many.... An extremely talented artist who is unknown to many....
George, I just started collecting Big Little Books recently. As a "rescue plan" more than a reading list. Viewing the years these books were printed, and the fact that they were aimed at getting young people to read more, I wonder what happened to the original owners. My father served as a Tank Commander in WW2, and I wonder how many young men reading these books in the early to mid 1930's wound up enlisting after December 7th... These books and stories are historic to me, and deserve to be saved before they crumble... -Gary
That first panel is exactly what my wife says and does to try to wake me up on Sunday mornings.... Great page....
Great Piece! Congrats.... but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it had some detail.... :-)
NIce piece, George. When you get bored with it, I'll be glad to take it off your hands. :-)
Steven,
It sounds like we share a very similar taste in comic art. Good for you!
George.....that is quite a "Prelim" !!! Wilson's work is always high quality.
Mr. Terrific for President. I don't care which party. :-)
Gorgeous page...and more evidence that some pages should be published only in Black and White!
Great work by Draut. Congrats on being the caretaker. You are probably the perfect person to protect this piece for posterity.
Ruben,
Never been a "flipper". Rick was a close friend of mine for years, and we only lost touch a few years ago due to illness on my end. Hated to let this page go, but Medical Bills made it a must do. Hope all is well with him...
Nicely laid out...Love the way the character in panel one can't even fit in the frame...Although, as nicely done as the art is, I just need my Frankenstein to have a flat head that you can set a can of beer on. :-)
I'm still patiently waiting for Wolverine to show up in a cameo in Little Archie.... Would be a great Halloween crossover... :-)
Yes, I confess....Blame my crummy photo, not Rick's gorgeous art. :-)
Great storytelling and great art by Fred Carrillo. When isn't Fred's art great? Congrats!
Wow, I didn't even know there WAS a Green Hornet strip. Been looking for a Mike Hammer strip myself, so I know how hard it is to find a goodie like this one. Congrats!
Believe me, it looks much better in person. I had to start using a document camera when my scanner went belly-up, and images are not what I'd like them to be. It is a beauty, though.
Yes, I agree. The entire story is colored the same way. Almost unreadable in color. It has the look of artwork that was meant to be published in one of Marvel's B&W mags from the late 70's, but somehow ended up in DC hands. A mystery to be solved, I think.....
Yeah, I chuckled at that too. the "F'd Up" wasn't usually Fouled, was it?
Yes, Van Buren is mostly overlooked these days. His long history of illustration has left a wonderful legacy. FYI, I have another Van Buren daily with content that might interst you. About gasoline prices many years ago.

(I am old enough to remember when gas was 33 cents per gallon...3 for a Buck!)
Amazing inks by Magyar. One of the most underrated artists in comics. His pencils are also excellent. Check out Question #20.... All Magyar, both pencils and inks....
FYI -- Rick did BOTH pencils and inks for the entire issue #20, including the cover. Outstanding work.
Another Vic Catan gem! Amazing layout and linework. Genius....
Gotta love Dick Ayers. He considered this a "Sketch"... I have sketches that make this look pretty well finished in comparison.
Great page, Steve. I have an Ayers western page in my gallery which has always been one of my favorites. The first time I ever met Dick was about 25 years ago at the old Great Eastern Convention in Philadelphia. He was sitting all alone in Artist's Alley while fanboys were scampering to see Rob Liefeld on the other side of the Convention Center. I felt so fortunate to be able to spend more than a half hour talking with Dick about his Sgt. Fury work, all the inking he did over Jack Kirby, and his western artwork for Two-Gun Kid. Interesting that when I told him I loved the way he drew horses in action sequences, he replied "Thats very kind of you! Stan Lee always told me he didn't like the way I drew horses..." Go figure. A true gentlemen. I have another great Dick Ayers story, but that's for another day.
Great piece, Steve. Love these house ads, but have never been able to find one I liked. Congrats!
Question transformation pages are really rare. Almost never see them. Congrats!
Yes....when attempting bad actions, one must "Know Thine Enemy"...
Love this poignant strip. Congrats to you for being the caretaker for all of these.
I have been looking for one of these for many years, and now I can see why I couldn't find any!
Yep...definitely feels like it should have been published in B&W too...
Just got this piece in today's mail direct from Val. Took 7 days via Priority US Mail !!! Great packing by Val, who is great to work with. How's your mail delivery going?
Yes...it's a very interesting story also. About the TV media vs. the Print media. You can read it online at this URL:
Yeah, it's a really long URL...
Agree 100%. Very underrated artists working at tiny page rates. Loaded with detail which usually got swallowed up by the coloring. No shot at the colorists who were just doing their job, but most of these pieces look far superior in B&W.
Yup. Life imitating art once more.... except for the aliens from outer space!
I agree completely, and Tom Yeates is another artist who deserves a lot more love from collectors!
Artist is FRANK BORTH? Let me know. I have another Gulliver page floating around here somewhere....
