DescriptionSal Buscema’s Hulk was how I was introduced to the character and his art really resonated with me visually. His Hulk will always be the definitive version of the character. For these reasons, this commission means a lot. I really appreciate how Sal was able to capture the Hulk in the style that he used when drawing the earlier issues in his storied tenure on the title. These early issues is where I discovered the Hulk and I really wanted to capture this with the commission. I was able to find several examples of panels that closely mirrored the classic Larkin painting and provided them to Sal as reference. I would not be surprised of Bob used Sal as reference for his painting as the teeth and fist clenched look was a trademark of Sal’s run on the Hulk.I am thrilled with this commission. Big thank you to both Sal and his agent Al Czarnecki who helped set this commission up. If you are interested in getting a commission from Sal, please click the link below to go to my site for Al’s contact info. While you are there, be sure to check out the Sal Buscema podcast interview – it’s great listening. http://thejadegiant.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/sal-buscema-hulk-interview-podcast-and-a-great-commission-opportunity/ http://thejadegiant.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/sal-buscema-hulk-commission-bob-larkin-homage/ PS - if anyone knows if it is possible to link directly, please let me know via private message - thanks! Awesome Dave! Sal did a great job capturing that early hulk look. Glad you finally got this one!

Although my introduction to the character was with the great Herb Trimpe, it was Sal Buscema's classic run that made The Incredible Hulk one of my favorite titles and characters! When I look at this close-up, it just brings back so many memories of those great issues. While I very much enjoyed the works of John Byrne, Dale Keown, Gary Frank, and all the other great Hulk artists over the years, Sal's Hulk will always hold a special place in my heart.

I didn’t get a scan of this prior to the package arriving so I was antsy to see how it looked to say the least. I was grinning ear to ear when I pulled it out of the package due to the similar memories you mentioned. Some commissions are a homerun – this is one of them for me.

This is one incredible piece of artwork! Perfectly captures the look and feel of the Hulk in the early run of Sal on the book. This is why he will always be THE Hulk artist.

Dave I love this close up, have you noticed how similar it is to the Incredible Hulk 201 page 27 panel 3 that is in Rob L's gallery ?

I was hoping that someone would notice the similarity. I shared with Sal agent (Al Czarnecki) that I really wanted the homage to be done in the style Sal employed during the early part of his run on the Hulk title. I supplied a few panels as reference for the style perspective and took the panel you referenced and blew it up to show the sense of scale on the page. I also cut out the fist and rotated it to be more like the original Larkin painting. From there, Sal hit an absolute home run. So, it should be pretty obvious that I am a fan of that page lol.

Your homage series is one of the best themed collections out there, Dave and this is the star of it. Congrats!

Awesome pin up! When I think of the Hulk in comics, I often reflect upon Sal's interpretation of everyone favotite green skinned behemoth.

How have I not commented on this great piece and also, how do I not have a piece from Sal in my collection?

You need to remedy this situation, but only once ... I don't need the competition! Thanks!
