Description

Caniff Girls Galore! This piece came as part of a neat collection. This was inside an envelope filled with prints and an original piece of art Caniff gave to a fan as thank you for helping him with some research. I have never seen this print before. It is fully hand-colored and radiant in person.

To me it looks like something that was done for the enlisted men during world war 2.

Very sweet piece by the master! And if I've to choose just one of these beauties, I'll go for the brunette in green gown, lower right :)

I've seen a black and white print version of this with some odds and ends that originated from Shel Dorf's collection. Dorf had obtained a lot of original art and prints, but he also xeroxed a bunch of other images. My impression was that the drawing was done as part of the how to draw comics correspondence class that Caniff contriburted to. I can't confirm that, but it is my impression that's what it is.

I knew I had seen this art somewhere ... I found it reprinted on page 702 of RC Harvey's biography of Caniff, Meanwhile. It's got a large pic of Steve Canyon and the logo for his strip in the center. He's flanked by the pretty girls. It's credited as being from the Shel Dorf collection. Also, if you look on pages 298-299 of Dean Mullaney's Caniff A Visual Biography, you'll see various permutations of the same women in promo ads for the Steve Canyon strip. Caniff reused a lot of his imagery for prints he'd send to fans and promos for the strips.

Thanks for recalling and finding the sources of the image.  I know Shel often took images out of strips and created these montages and sometimes it was new work by caniff.  I thought this might have been new work but seeing how the girls move around in the image from the Mullaney book, I now wonder and perhaps there is no original art to accompany this print.

Incredible! Caniff really knew how to draw the ladies.
