DescriptionHere's the final cover image that I turned in for Ultimates #3. I drew the swirling cape on a separate sheet of paper, and combined it with the Scarlet Witch-Wolverine art in Photoshop. (Thanks to Brandon Peterson for all his tech help.) Anyway, I just found out that this final cover image is rejected and will not see print. It was deemed too risque. Story of my life. (The cape was inked with Micron pens and the Scarlet Witch-Wolverine was done with a ball-point pen.)Social/Sharing |

Although I understand the need to find a solution in order to convert your original drawing to fit a wider audience, I don't think that the final image was very succesful.
While the original drawing done with a ball-point pen (!!) was awesome and I love your work inked with Micron pens, I don't think that both styles combine too well.
I just hope that I didn't bother you with my criticize. I'm looking forward to see more wonderful works like the one you did with ball-point pen posted in your CAF gallery! Thanks for sharing!!

OT: BTW, check this gallery by Juan Francisco Casas doing hiperrealistic works with a ball-point pen.

Gotta' respectfully disagree with that last comment. I think the choice to simplify the cape makes for a wonderful contrast. It frames out the figures and leads the eye right where its meant to go. Amazing work as usual, Frank!

Tim, I agree with you that the framing cape boost the focus on the figures, which is the ultimate goal. I just feel that both styles are too much different and IMHO they doesn't fit quite well. Maybe if the cape would be also drawn with ball-point in a simplier way, it would get the same goal but more merged...
Sheesh... I can't believe that I'm arguing with two of my favourite artists... I should check if I took my medication lately...

Too Risque?? Who's the Dickwad editor on that book? They have the team watching a porn video of Ironman and Wasp in the book..but an artistic shot of two characters embracing is too risque? Fuck them! Their lost. Great job by the way Frank.

so how do you really feel BUZZ..???.....it is funny how many "bosses" there are ....and this is a good example of all the "behind the scenes" crap artists put up with to get a good piece of art out .

For some reason, I find the version with the cape a little sexier.

Censorship and rejection happen all the time. People get cold feet and reverse earlier decisions made by different departments. It's no big deal at this point. What's funny are the comments made by few on the internet stating that I did this drawing knowing full well that it was going to get censored. I have way too much work to do and very little time to waste. I'm not going to draw something knowingly that it's going to get axed.

Masterful!! Supremely impressive. I LOVE the hatching rendering technique on this piece and the Ult. Spidey 100 cover. A gorgeous work of art!

Sweet. I told Joe Mad about this cover at WWLA. I seriously feel this cover deserves to be printed.

So so, they still want to make some small changes even in this tamed version. Didn't this thing happen even to Michelangelo? So You are in good company. But now let's see, what can it be, that's still too offensive for public viewing and demands a small change... ah ja, of course! It's suggestive, when, in all their heat, Wolverine drives out his blades towards the Scarlet Witch !
