Description

Edward C. Caswell (1879-1953) was a well-known and award-winning artist who is best remembered for his drawings of Greenwich Village and other, sometimes international, urban scenes in the early 20th Century. This is a rare Caswell both by virtue of it's natural setting and its depiction of an attractive woman, who seems to have a way with birds.

It was sold as a Caswell Gibson Girl from the 1920's. It does have a small notation, "To Betty" near the signature (perhaps it's a picture of her) but no direct indication of when it was done. The hem length places it after 1920 but not during the mid-20's when skirts were considerably shorter as was hair. The facial profile is like that of a Gibson Girl which favors it being close to 1900-1919. The bee stung lips are a 20's thing. The Mary Pickford curls are unlikely to be used after 1928, when Mary had them cut off. The hips are more in tune with the pre-1920 ideal than the boyish figure popular in the 20's and, to a lesser extent,into the 1940's.* The chemise gown is no help at all since such gowns are commonly used for pictures of this nature in every era. I place it 1921-1923.

Caswell should have painted more women and fewer buildings.

*The most popular pin up of WW II was a rear view of Betty Grable whose hips were thin and her butt was seriously flat by today's standards.
