DescriptionOf all the historic Pulp art I've posted lately, this one is one of the most special to me.I'm a HUGE lifelong Doc Savage fan. It was 1977, I was 13 and the Boris Vallejo cover to the Bantam Paperback "The Angry Ghost" just pulled me in. I was hooked from there. My Doc Savage collection of stuff is really something. Pulps, books, comics, magazines, art, mugs, calendars, and SO much more (just ask my wife!). But to have a piece of original art from the Pulp days where his adventures started just connects me even more to the character in a very special way. Street & Smith published the highly successful Pulp from 1933 to 1949. Since then the character has been in the public eye in one medium or another. Be it the wildly successful paperback series, movies, or comics, Doc Savage has entertained fans and influenced entertainment as we know it today. So much of what first appeared in Doc Savage stories have been usurped in popular characters since. Doc and his "Fabulous Five" had an oath (Green Lantern). He had an arctic "Fortress of Solitude" (Superman). Two of the Fabulous Five bickered a lot. (Thing and Torch from the FF) Doc was an orphan who was left a fortune (Batman). He is a brilliant scientist, detective, and martial artist (Batman). His first name was Clark and he was marketed and called Superman. I could literally bore you all day with SO MANY more concepts that were lifted directly from the pages of Doc Savage adventures... but I won't. The artist here is the legendary George Rozen... who only did three Doc covers! So I'm really lucky to have this cover prelim. While not as tightly rendered as the Western Pulp covers by Rozen that I've posted previously, this one is pretty much on target to what appeared in the final cover. The one interesting thing here is the gun. In the prelim Doc is carrying a rifle, but in the published cover he is not. An interesting editorial decision, Id say. And in this case I think a bad one. I much prefer the prelim this time. From the Spring 1949 issue. I have it nicely matted with a color reproduction of the printed cover. Social/Sharing |

If his mom was Martha Savage, I'd have to watch the Doc Savage movie again. The head faces us in the final to show us the money maker. The gun in his hand makes him the aggressor as a hunter as opposed showing the danger from the polar bear. People might mistake it for a hunting expedition story.
