Description

Easily one of the best RAREBIT FIENDs ever. As good as any Little Nemo.

In the first decade of the 20th century, the crowning glory of every lady’s get-up was her hat. It was always liberally garnished with poufs of lace, yards of ribbon, bouquets of flowers, bunches of fruit – and besides any or all of these, it frequently carried a nest of birds. By 1911, women were so attached to their hats that they even weared them at home. McCay had an obsession with women’s hats that drove him to attack and satirize vanity of women as often as possible. Note the woman's words in the second to last panel: "Won't I make a frightful sight without any hair on?"

The strip is an early effort to depict sequential motion and anticipates McCay’s later work in animation which started with his first animated film in 1911. The pace of events is indicated with a series of panels all exactly the same size and shape, like separate frames of a motion-picture film, indicating the key developments from panel to panel.
