DescriptionLastly for this evening, this is the piece Steve sold me, which while sadly the previous owner (not Steve) had not stored this well over an extended period and it suffered a great deal of surface acid burn.Part of me thought "condition", but the other part thought "conservation". While there is nothing I can do to repair the damage, I can neutralize the effect and get this piece framed almost immediately with acid free materials. It didn't take me long to see the beauty behind the burn and for such a large and magnificent work, the deal Steve struck with me was fair. Once the piece gets here, I will try to get a pic of this in more positive lighting, and hope I can find a mat color which can detract from the burn. This is the backstory Steve provided for this piece: "The amusement park piece I bought from another collector; when I showed it to Bernie he told me it was a concept piece for a park in Florida which never happened. Note the shack on stilts, which Bernie told me is his tribute to his favorite Haunt of Fear cover (HoF #27) by one of his idols, Ingels." Steve, again, thanks for working with me! Update: 10/19/2013 I was very excited to receive this piece and though I cannot reverse the damage done, I do believe I've done all I can do to preserve the piece going forward. As the first comment states, there is something about the overall color change which sort of adds to this images mood, I thought this too! I was thinking along the lines of colors to mute the deterioration, and attempt to have the matting accents blend. Well, with the available colors at hand, I think I pulled this off fairly well. I knew I wanted to give credit and title, and found a sheet of paper which I feel accented the penciling color to boot. Of the pieces Steve offered, this spoke to me even though I questioned better judgment about condition. Now that it's in my hands and I've had the chance to admire this up close up while preserving and presenting this piece, I couldn't be happier. However, as I was putting this together, my thoughts kept pondering: "What kind of Amusement Park was Bernie conceiving? I know Disney has some scary moments, but a guy being eaten by a plant? Out of the mind of Bernie Wrightson comes some marvelous ironies! Thanks again Steve... For me, this is what collecting art is all about! Social/Sharing |

I am so happy to see what you did with this wonderful piece, and so glad it is in your hands. I couldn't believe how the previous owner stored it. But I too saw through the condition and admired the beauty of the piece. And it is even more beautiful (is that the proper word for a drawing a of man-eating plant in a lonely, scary bayou?!) now that you've done your matting and framing magic. You did use acid-free matting, right? ; )
