Artwork Details

DescriptionThis was commissioned last year at NYCC and picked up today, 6/30/13 at Wizard World NYC. Once again Mr. Golden displays an uncanny knack for precise details, dynamic motion, wild imagination and all kinds of cool. What's interesting about this piece is that the final art you see here is completely different from how the original art began. Last October, I asked Michael for a Big Daddy Roth style vehicle, ridden by some kind of monster dude...as reference, along with some Big Daddy Roth stuff, for the character I showed him a piece that he had done for a toy design (Bruiser, the sketch of which can be found in the deluxe version of The Art Of Excess); a hulking scifi armored ape drawn in his more cartoony style. By the end of the Sunday of NYCC, he had finished the pencils for the piece and said he'd get to the final at home. I had no doubt that he'd come through with fantastic results. What I didn't expect was for him to completely reinvision the artwork! As you'll see in the other photo here, the original drawing was of a baboon guy riding a more warlike bike with machine guns....Michael said he felt the piece needed to be more exciting and less profile and also mentioned he wanted to draw a car (closer to the Big Daddy Roth ref) so he erased the original drawing! He said that he had already started inking the baboon sketch before deciding to start over and that there are a couple of areas that are holdovers from the original drawing. I'll have to investigate to see if I can tell... At any rate, It's an awesome drawing and I can see why he made the changes he did...even if I kinda do still have a soft spot for the original sketch. On one hand it's cool to see him do two different takes on the same theme, and on the other I was looking forward to seeing how he would handle the inks for the baboon. All's good...I love it! Maybe down the line I can print out the blueline of the original and he can ink that.. Thankfully I took that pic last year! 11" x 17" on bristol paper. Social/Sharing |

Wow! Golden strikes again with another awesome commision. Both the new and old designs are cool, but I realy like the new one.

Ed Roth came to mind immediately upon viewing this piece, even from the thumbnail. MG can do it all, and I like the finished piece much more than the original, though I think both are great. Big congrats on a fresh idea for a commission. Long live the spirit of "Big Daddy."

That is a phenomenal piece! The detail in the car parts is unreal, i absolutely love the deformed nature of the whole composition, he has such an unreal gift to skew realistic things into stylized imagery, to be able to convey so much movement and action through a drawing is a special gift that Michael can pull off second to none........

Awesome commission! My preference is actually the final inked version, but it would be cool to see both.

Damn...that's a great commission. Every time I see his work, I think it's a photostat because it's so darn precise.
