DescriptionAround 3:45 pm on the last day of NYCC this year, I walked past the Desert Wind table and noticed JR JR drawing away at a sketch cover. I asked if he was doing any more sketches and he pointed to a pile of sketch covers he needed to get through. He said 'maybe at 5/5:15 he could do something for me.'I then told him about how I met he and his dad at a Thanksgiving Creation Con in 1979 and they both were drawing quick head sketches for kids at big round table in a back area. He seemed to light up when I told him that and I asked if I could show him the art, to which he said sure. He really seemed to enjoy seeing the Iron Man he did for me and the Cap with inscription to me from his dad. Both are here to view. So again he said, stop by at 5 and I'll see if I can scratch something out for you. At 4:40 I headed back up to the main floor from Artist Alley where I had gone to. Unfortunately I had forgotten where the booth was (I didn't recall it was Desert Wind and just remembered that Jim Shooter was there). I walked up and down a number of aisles in the vicinity I felt it was in and until at around 5:05 I finally spotted the booth. Whew. JR JR was standing up, packing up his stuff, going over some prints with one of his people and completing a transaction with a fan. I said hi again and he said 'ok, what have you got'...I took out one of my Kirby monster books and he said 'ah no monsters, I can draw you a Spidey'...so I said 'ok, then you can draw it on regular paper..' to which he then said 'ok give me the book'...and turned to an open back page and started scribbling away. Now, bear in mind he had not looked at any reference and as soon as he starts drawing I was like 'that's a space beast!'...beginning by drawing the horns on the helmet. I told him that's my favorite character and he just drew it off the top of his head..I think he just drew something that came to him, but it's so crazy that what that was turned out to be pretty much a Space Beast. It was super quick (maybe 2-3 minutes). His handler was there and she said 'sketches are $50 and I handed over my cash. But when he finished he said 'nah, it's free, he's being waiting all day' and she handed me back my money. In reality it was a spur of the moment decision on my part to ask for a sketch and only around an hour before, lol. Is that a stand up guy or what? Super cool..and for a 2 minute sketch it's got all the emotion and underlying construction that I'd want from a Romita drawing. Couldn't be happier and what a way to wind up a whirlwind (as always) NYCC. Social/Sharing |
