I had been looking for a nice orphan annie strip when i saw this one for for sale - ridiculously overpriced. certainly my heart swooned but my wallet (and sanity) said absolutely no...!

of course, while it remained for sale online, i visited it often, sometimes very tempted to pull the trigger regardless of its market value; but always walking away...

then one day it vanished, and i had that feeling we all get when we pass up a piece of art only to hold our breath in the hope that it doesn't appear in someone else's CAF gallery!! (for we all know, in such cases, there are rarely second chances.)

fortunately, 6 or 7 months later, the strip showed up in heritage's sunday auction and i was able to buy it for a song... proving that sometimes a piece ends up where it belongs!

while i love gray's annie strips, this one completely slayed me - even without a glimpse of annie and sandy's faces. for me, it is the feeling of drift amongst the darkness, the water lines, the texture of the beat-to-hell posts, and the feeling of utter loneliness in the night - offering the exact quality of mood i was looking for... annie and sandy lost in the landscape of a german expressionist woodcut!!!!!

the writing also offers much in the way of emphasizing the atmosphere and mood, ala: "creeks runnin' through th'marsh like sleepy black snakes..."

Forget to comment this beauty! Maybe because i was the lower bidder at the time :) The dog, the raft, the water... One of the most beautiful piece of art in CAF!
