Description

Published 1962 by Dell
First in the four issue series of the adventures of the crew of the submarine Proteus as they travel deeper in the ocean.
As with Dell issues of this time period, it was a fully painted cover by John McDermott.
John started his career working for Disney before enlisting in the Marines during WWII. The marines utilized him as a combat artist, travelling with the troops to document the battles.
After the War, he became a freelance artist doing illustrations for magazines and novels.

I'm only familiar with McDermott's work on vintage paperback novel covers, primarily Westerns, so it's really cool to see that he also did some comic book work for Dell as well!

And I see serpent reaping
In my Voyage to the deep

I don't know why nobody told crew
How to control your sub
I don't know how someone dove with you
Dell bought and sold you

I look at the world
And Proteus is turning
Underwater in the deep

With every oil paint
He must surely be learning
Illustrator gently sweeps
