DescriptionA close up scan of the gorgeous painting so you can see The Dude's brushwork and detail. Wow.From Steve's Blog. For the record, I asked for Mary Jane, then asked if he could do more of a fine art piece based on the lithograph I sent (instead of MJ), something in the vein of his beer label gods and goddesses. That got translated into "MJ as a harvest goddess". Works for me. < Thing is, I always see things way different in my mind, and these "image flashes" usually hit me very suddenly, to where I have to seize the moment and then attack the board with everything I've got. As some of you know, as I have for many decades, paint up little thumbnail color sketches to lock in where I'm going with it, and then I start painting. Armed with my watercolor brushes, watercolor board, and just plain watercolors, I can begin. The reference I used in this piece were some autumn leaves photos from my reference files, and a couple of studies I did from the mirror for Mary Jane's hands. I rest, I just tried to rely on my often faulty memory of drawing and painting abilities and work myself though it. If I get myself in trouble, I thought, I'll just call in a real model for the parts I can't figure out, or maybe just look in a mirror. It's hard to believe that my puny brain can download this kind of knowledge just from my head, but I suppose anything's possible. 35 years of study and endless sketchbook practice probably helped. So I just finished up the barefoot and shapely Mary Jane until it looked "right"; the face, hands, flowing gown, hand basket of fruit, grain bundle, and all the beautiful maple leaves falling about her. My fond memories of seeing these Maple trees turning vibrant orange, yellow, or red, every year up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (the U.P. to uninitiated) are some of my best memories when I lived up there in high school. In late September, the air had just turned cool, school had started up again, and as the white noise of the other students would play around me like a soft, barely noticeable buzz, I would stare silently out the bus window to take in the changing trees. >> Social/Sharing |

Wow is right. I've got a fair amount of his work and this is one of his best efforts and that's saying something. Love to see the entire thing in this detail.

This blew me away - much more detailed and extravagant than what I expected to get. I will try to scan or get a photo of the whole painting. It is large and this is all that I could get on the scanner bed!

The detail scan looks a lot nice to my eyes - not as bright. I imagine this is more of how it looks. I remember he did that "Egyptian Princess" painting and this is right up there with that one, maybe better - yeah better.

The other image is a picture from Steve - it may be a photo or large scan. When I hold the painting up to my computer screen, it's very close.

Figured. It is so much richer. Maybe they scanned it on some sort of 'high' setting or something - too bright. What size is it? Those beer labels he did were also quite nice but this trumps them. He has a real eye for color and design.
