DescriptionBeautiful page from the 1970s Marvel black and white magazine. Typically strong & chunky pencils by iconic Hulk artist Herb Trimpe are rounded off in breathtaking fashion by legendary inker Alfredo Alcala, giving every figure and object its own weight and solidity.I remember reading these stories as a kid and being mesmerised by Alcala's unique treatment of the Hulk in this series - everything looked so 'real', so convincingly sculpted. When you hold an Alcala page in your hands and study it, you see how many techniques he brought to bear on a single image, how broad and sophisticated his visual language was. The scan doesn't do it justice - this page has such weight to it! Very proud to finally have a lovely example of both Trimpe and Alcala back in my collection. Welcome home! Just learnt the story this piece is from is entitled "A Gathering of Doom!" Written by the very skilled scribe Doug Moench - a real Marvel mainstay. It seriously does not get better - vintage, brilliant and unashamedly cheesy Marvel! Social/Sharing |

I have to admit, it's the old school Iron Man which drew me in...but it's the insane mark-making skills of the divine Alcala which kept me hooked!

I always love a landscape panel but that last panel with the foliage is really sweet!

Agreed - there's so much mastery and nuance in that last panel alone. Alcala's skills at rendering any object or texture are pretty close to miraculous.

I don't mean to short-change Herb, but Alcala really makes this one!

Gene, I couldn't agree more! Alcala remains one of the finest embellishers to grace the pages of comics.

Yowza! Loving this page is a no-brainer. What's not to love about a story with aliens and the original Iron Man armor?

I agree, Steve - much as I love my scummy alien overlords and superheroes (they sell the page, after all), it's that last panel which has the most textural and design artistry. Alcala was one of the finest inkers in comics.

Outstanding page from the Rampaging Hulk. Powerfully pencilled by Herb Trimpe and superbly inked by Alfredo Alcala. Love the way Alcala's ink washes give weight to the figures. Even the strange looking aliens look more realistic with Alcala's inks. Fabulous pick-up!

Thanks for the appreciation, Bill. I'm a HUGE fan of Alcala's inks on all the pencillers from The Rampaging Hulk mag - some of the best black and white work Marvel ever put out there, in my opinion. You really do feel the weight and volume on everything when Alfredo puts his masterful hand to it.
