DescriptionI went to see Pete Docter and Don Peri at The Walt Disney Family Museum on March 1, 20214. They were addressing directors at the Disney studio while pointing out Walt Disney himself was the lead creative force working on stories and gags, approving storyboards, and such. The directors, who often only got "story" credit, were left to work on the actual production such as working out animation timing on music bar sheets and exposure sheets. They covered Burt Gillett, Wilfred Jackson, Dave Hand, Ben Sharpsteen, Ham Luske, Clyde Geronimi, Jack Kinney, and Woolie Reitherman. Jackson, the son of a piano teacher, is the one who brought the metronome to the studio so animators could time their work to the soundtrack. It was kept secret from competitors for over one year. They spoke on three waves of animators through the 1920's and '30's with each wave bringing greater skill: those who came out with Disney from Kansas City, the veterans of the New York City studios, and the college-trained artists. Disney wanted better results, but films after Snow White were less successful. The directors needed to figure out which of Disney's wishes to follow. Sleeping Beauty went overbudget when the first director tried to do too much. Following the presentation, the WDFM staff said we could have two items signed. Pete Docter drew sketches as well as signing his name. I bought Don Peri's Working with Walt which includes an interview with Don Duckwall, the father of retired librarian Larry Duckwall at the Alameda County Library. Larry told me he worked in the studio mailroom for a time, but didn't realize his good fortune.Social/Sharing |
