DescriptionMiller's follow up to the great Dark Knight Returns was not well received, but I think aspects of it are excellent, particularly his reinterpretations of various DC heroes, including Plastic Man, Elongated Man, and Green Lantern, among others. I was blown away in the very first sequence (after a scene-setting TV news prologue), in which we find ourselves in a chilly aquatic world, "Somewhere on earth... where monsters dwell..." and Miller lays out his paradigm up-turning vision of Ray Palmer, The Atom, as a pure warrior and a literal colossus. The cartooning throughout this passage is simply outstanding, and I feel honored to own a page of it. Thanks to Mitch Itkowitz for the generous payment plan which made it possible.Social/Sharing |

What was wrong with DKSA, wherein Miller often seemed to be channeling Harvey Kurtzman writing a Mad parody of Dark Knight, was not this page, this sequence or even, by and large, the first issue.

These pages are wicked without that crazy coloring job...

Very cool. The book was almost unreadable to me but the art speaks for itself. Looks a bit like a Frazetta Famous Funnies homage in the last panel.

having stopped reading comics in the late 1970's, i have almost zero interest in everything published after 1980, but this page is moody and gorgeous and goddamn wonderful... definitely miller at his best... and holy cow that bottom panel is a killlllller!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great page! This Atom sequence gave me hopes for the series! Unfortunately, it was downhill from there.

I loved this book! I am a big fan of the visually more melodramatic frank miller that emerged with Sin City and has just gotten more and more brash as time goes on. Did anyone really expect this book to be full of 16 panel grids filled with fragmented visuals after 10 years of Sin City? I like Lynn varely's experimental approach to color on the DKSA but I think had she painted it in the same fashion as DKR or 300 the reception to the book would have been completely different. Her painted style really gives gravitas to line art of any kind. That's just my opinion though, because I really love this book and Miller's modern work in general. Congrats!

This is so good! Some of the visual storytelling in DKSA worked perfectly, experimental as it was, and this is one highly successful example.

Such a great page. One of my favorite sequences in the book, thanks so much for sharing this.

This was the best part. Some of the other bits were shuddersome in their awfulness. The Dark Knight by Miller, Janson and Varley is still my favorite comic of all time. Stuff those silver age 'classics.' Many overblown yarns ( Stan Lee and his clones, take a bow of shame )...Wait, it happened to Frank too. Comics sure burn up creators talent.
