Description

This is a huge, mixed-media piece by a Montreal street and fine artist TONE. I met TONE a few years ago after going downtown and spending parking and admission on an epic failure of a comic convention. As I was walking out I noticed they had a Fine Art Fair going on at the convention center too so I paid the admission and went in. Lots of great art to see and salvaged the day but then I came to TONE's booth and was blown away. I would leave with my first painting by TONE that day. It has been on my wall ever since and has been the opening screen on my cell phone for the past 6 years or so since I got the painting. I have since added a few other pieces by TONE and we have remained friendly talking. Being Francophone and a bit younger than me I took the chance and asked him how well he knew Corto and the Dragonlady. He knew Corto quite well and knew enough about the Dragonlady for me to ask him to do a commission. He said yes.

Here is it, a triptych roughly 36 x 60 inches in total size. TONE has several different formats to his work but his large portraits are what initially drew me in. He used typography, mixed media and stencil to define lines and shapes and these are prominent themes and motifs in his work. Mixed media with the incorporation of Chinese coins and WWII era newspapers add depth and atmosphere to this piece. Here we have the Dragonlady in both here wartime and pre-war personas. This was a brilliant idea by TONE to allow him to incorporate his style into the theme. Corto acts as a conduit of transition in this piece. Although Corto never met the Dragonlady, they existed in the same world and there was the potential for them to meet. Also, Corto and the Dragonlady like everyone else that lived through that epoch were touched and involved in the war in some aspect. I am very happy and surprised by the final piece. Like all art, a little apprehension at first is good. It is a relationship that builds over time.

You can see my 3 other TONE pieces here. While you are there, take a look around the gallery, I think there are a lot of really cool pieces but of course I am a little impartial.

It's certainly not easy to deal with two giants of comics history and even more difficult to show something new about so celebrated characters, but this piece turned out great indeed!

I really didn't know what to expect from this commission, but I can honestly say that this wasn't it, and it's AMAAAAAAZING! So cool! Absolutely killer! Seriously, I don't even know where to begin...Everything, from the typography to staying true to the likenesses of the characters, and to the overall graphic design quality, is SPECTACULAR! I can't wait to see it on the wall, where the sheer size will also come into context. I hope you're as exited about it as I am. Congrats, man!

Instantly draws the viewer in, just on the computer screen...can only imagine the effect in person.

Cool piece! By the way, those are Japanese 5 yen coins. Not Chinese. :-)

This adds up to more than simply the sum of two beloved characters. I can see why you are so taken with the artist.
