DescriptionThis wonderful page may just be my favourite Dave Gibbons page in my collection!Anyone remember Harlem's Heroes? The strip was a crazy mix of Rollerball and Mad Max, with villains scheming behind the scenes while the Heroes roster regularly met violent and spectacular deaths in the arenas of this cruel and bloody sport! I love this page - every panel leans into the grittiness of this game, the spectators as well as the players - and that vertical left panel with the Scotsmen bursting upwards with their plumes of crude gas and oil! You just know they're nuts, and whoever goes up against them is going to pay a heavy price! Incredible detail and Dave's skills as a superb storyteller and draughtsman were on full show even at this age - nearly 50 years ago!! Thanks a million to Joseph from BritComicsArt for being the best rep for the best artists in the known universe. Social/Sharing |

This feeds into the same mania people have for football with their identity tied to their teams. Great social commentary and spectacular artwork by one of the finest illustrators out of the UK.

Great line about Scotland's fans being being the wildest and unruly before becoming independent. Tom Tully, the writer was a Scot. Shows why 2000ad had that extra edge over other comics. Satire with a wink of politics. Fantastic art from Gibbons. Boy did the artist have to do a lot of art to compensate for the lack of colour. And boy did we lap it up!

It's a classic in so many ways! Early 2000AD had that edgy feel that made it feel like the Punk Rock of comics. And the artists! Some of the best of British cut their teeth on those early tales and went on to do great things. Love the way Gibbons' detail is so perfectly suited to black and white, he really does work hard to make the page sing.
