DescriptionSPOILER ALERT: DO NOT read this page if you haven't read the whole story. Seriously. It would be akin to catching the closing seconds of "Citizen Kane", the ending of "Casablanca" without having enjoyed all that has lead up to it. You can't "unread" this ending and so I recommend you hunt down the story which is readily available in Detective Comics #500 and in several "Best of Batman" collections. You'll be glad you did.Okay. After all that, the unedited version of the page is shown below as an "additional image". Alan Brennert doesn't have a huge body of work in comics but the stories that I've read by him have all been superb. The story itself is intriguing (Could even Batman have stopped the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne?) and well worthy of any anniversary issue. But for me, it is this epilogue that elevates it to the level of a classic. I'd put the quality of the writing in these closing panels up against just about anything else I've read in my many years of enjoying comics. In terms of Giordano's artwork, this story sits alongside "There is No Hope in Crime Alley!" as his finest work on Batman. Many thanks to Mike Burkey for this one. Social/Sharing |

Hiroshi, you landed a page from another of my favorite Batman stories—congratulations, buddy, this is the real deal (and by one of my all-time favorite batman writers... and he didn't do too many!).

Fantastic piece - I wasn't familiar with it, so I read the spoiler panels (of course - who wouldn't?) and then went and found scans of the story floating around. Historic...

Great page, and it has the best comedy line I have ever read in a Batman comic page. 'maybe we ought to get mugged more often.'
