DescriptionIn the 20s and 30s, Charles Gates Sheldon created some absolutely gorgeous pastel portraits of some of the most beautiful starlets Hollywood has ever seen. At auction, prices for some examples have reached nearly $20,000! Perhaps my absolute favorite was his portrait of Myrna Loy for Movie Classic Magazine, which sadly I do not own. I was able to pick up this pencil portrait of Lilian Harvey for quite cheap due to the considerable foxing. My plan is to bring it to a conservator at some point to see if I can get it restored to its former glory, but I haven't gotten around to that yet.Lilian Harvey was a popular actress in the 20s and 30s, but found the majority of her success in Europe, particularly Germany. She made a couple of English-language films for Fox in the early 1930s, presumably the period during which this portrait was commissioned, but she was never able to gain a foothold in the American film market. She returned to Europe in 1935 and continued to make successful German films until her career was essentially cut short by the rise of the Nazi party. Social/Sharing |

Wow, that is some horrible foxing. What a shame that people didn't care for their original illustration. Still, it's fantastic to see that the art itself still survived intact, and it's a great drawing!

I showed some photos to a conservator in Brooklyn named Jon Derow who has done some incredible restorations (jdconservation.com) and he thought the foxing could be fixed. I just haven't made a trip to New York since I acquired the drawing, but I do hope to have her looking like new at some point!

I did notice on his website that he claims he could still give a ballpark estimate cost just based on pictures and info about the item. Maybe you should mention that to him and see if he could do that for you. I also have a piece that needs some tape and glue removal, but am wary of having the piece out of my hands, so I always put it off. Like you, it's just a matter of getting off my butt and getting it done, but I know all too well how much easier it is to just sit with it safely at home and never get around to it!
