Description

Nothing like getting a piece of art done by two of your favorite artists. Even nicer when it doesn’t cost you anything. This is yet another incredibly generous gift from my friend Jonathan Mueller. If you do a quick browse through this gallery room, you’ll find at least a half dozen other gifts Jon has been kind enough to bestow upon me over the years. I’m telling you, the guy is just too nice for his own good.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Arthur and Mike. As two of the industry’s biggest names, what are the odds that they would actually work on a piece together? Then again, what were the odds that these two would end up being friends as young up and coming artists? The fact that they actually lived in the same apartment complex in the early 80’s probably gave them plenty of time and opportunity to work on various pieces together. Still, I can pretty much count their known collaborations on one hand. Which makes them all the more special and rare.

As in most cases, this one is penciled by Arthur and inked by Mike (remember, Mike broke into the industry predominantly as an inker). While I don’t see much of Arthur’s stylistic signature elements here, Mike’s early 80’s trademark is fairly obvious in the inking. Especially on the tree trunk and grass at the bottom. Pieces like this are so much fun because you can not only see these two gifted talents finding their way, but also the flashes of what was to come. Two artists who could not be any more different in approach, style, technique, and philosophy. One hyper detailed, and the other being more economically minded. Both taking the long road to success without any compromises. As much fun as it is to see where they are now, for me it’s just as much fun to see where they came from.

Again, my profound gratitude to Jonathan for this wonderful new addition to my collection. Considering he, not too long ago, sold a significant portion of his own collection to pay for school, this is money he probably should not have spent, much less spent on me. Yet he did so without a second thought. I love ya bro.

Oh, and thanks for bringing me at least two steps closer to my 100 Art Adams pieces goal. LOL

HAPPY FATHER‘S DAY to all the dads and granddads out there!

Stay safe everyone!

I was also tempted by that one. But I found that it's a bit small and...no tail...

Interesting.  I was actually surprised by how big it was.  And since both Art and Mike were notorious for not drawing feet back in their early days, this one was kind of a rarity.  So I didn't mind the no tail.  I just assumed by how she was sitting that it was behind the tree trunk.  In any case, I am very happy you passed.

So that's why she is obviously wearing socks! (as part of her costume?) ^^

The tail is obviously an artist's choice as some draw it, others don't.

In any case, GREAT piece.

Thanks Ron!  And I assume your father's day wish is for everyone else and not me.  Unless you know something I don't.  LOL

I don't want to leave Kevin Nowlan out of the "favorites" group.  We need something for him to do.  Wait, Kevin designs logos.  How about it Kevin?  LOL

Stunning illustration. Love seeing artists' early work. Especially when it's Adams and Mignola. You look at the work and ponder how they got where they did from here. Just a great addition to your amazing collection.

Absolutely!  One of the most interesting and fascinating things about any artist is seeing that journey.  Where and  how they started.  Every step, every stumble, every detour, and every triumph.  And when that journey involves two of your favorite artists, it's even more fun to watch.  Thanks and stay safe my friend.

Thanks buddy!  Indeed a great combo of two of my favorite artists.  They haven't worked together in a long while, and only a very limited amount of collaborative pieces.  I think there are 3-4 publshed covers that I know of, and maybe a half dozen of these "just for fun" drawings (of which I own two).  Would love to get my hands on one of the published pieces, but I missed the boat on them 20 years ago and now they cost a fortune.  Appreciate the comment, as always.  Stay safe!
