DescriptionNot a San Diego trip, but in many ways better. Earlier this month, I drove down to Bakersfield to attend my dear friend Jonathan’s wedding. As some of you may know, Jon is usually the one who rides shotgun with me every year when I go to SDCC. But between my Mom’s health concerns and Jon’s concentration on Nursing School, neither of us had been to the show in some years. We were shooting for 2021, but his new job, me taking care of Mom, and COVID, got in the way. Same with 2022. Last year, I again decided to shoot for 2023, but made plans to go with another friend, as I knew Jon was dealing with getting the financing to buy his late grandmother’s house. Unfortunately, that other friend also decided to change homes in July, so again there went my co-pilot. When Jon invited me to his wedding, I thought that would be a perfect substitute for my San Diego road trip. No con and no art (or so I thought), but I was going to be with people I love for a very special occasion. I’d rent a car, rent a hotel room, and it would feel exactly like I was going down to SD (same route anyway). Little did I know of the surprise awaiting me.
Another thing that makes this piece very special is that there are actually TWO great stories behind it. Not just the story of how I got it, but also the story of how it came to be. My understanding from Jon is that the story was relayed to him by Terry himself. Obviously, we’re going to stay away from specific names and places, but according to Jon, this drawing came about as a result of a comic signing appearance that Terry did where no one showed up. Most people probably would have just waited an appropriate amount of time before saying, the heck with this I’m outta here! But to Terry’s credit, he stuck it out and used the vast amount of free time to create this exquisite drawing (which, of course, inspired the subsequent creation of the published cover). I think Jonathan has already done so, but I will echo his sentiments by saying thank you to all the people who decided not to show up to the signing. LOL About the art. While there are obvious similarities between the prelim and the published cover, I honestly feel that the prelim works so much better as a standalone drawing. With the published piece being drawn for color, there is so much more open space there that relies on the coloring to give it substance. The prelim, on the other hand, is brought to life by all the rich textures and subtle tones of the pencils. The rendering is inspired, and the shading on the piece does so much more than any coloring job could do. Plus, of course, there’s the added (priceless) value of the love with which it was given. Well, the only thing left to do is to once again thank my very kind, loving, and generous, friend Jonathan for one of the most special pieces of art I’ve ever received. Not sure what I ever did to deserve it, or you, but I truly feel blessed to have both. Thank you my friend. Appreciate you all stopping by. Social/Sharing |

This is a love story. Two wonderfully matched people who will now become as one. Art is lovely but love is life. I pray they enjoy each other's company be it in sickness or in health. It's also a love story about two friends. And one friend saving something precious from his collection and passing it on to a brother. There's no amount of money, no cache of art large enough, to trade in for the love shown here. Never happier than to have opened my computer at this moment.

Thank you my friend. I don't use the LIKE button a lot (as I prefer to just use the reply & quote feature) but your gracious comment really moved me. I think you understand perfectly what this precious memento means to me. Thanks for posting a comment that moved me almost as much as this gift.

Gorgeous pencil drawing by Terry Moore. I wonder if the slightly annoyed expression on her face was inspired by what Terry must have felt, sitting at a comic signing where no one showed up. Anyway, beautiful prelim and beautiful story.

OMG! How did I not get that read? LOL! The very first time I saw this piece, I immediately noticed the more than subtle sneer on her face. Of course I didn't know the backstory at the time. But when Jonathan told me, I should have put 2 and 2 together right away. Must be getting slow in my old age. Or maybe I'll just chalk it up to the fact that I was so excited by the wonderful gift that I wasn't thinking straight. Yeah, I'll go with that version. Thanks for the very observant comment my friend.
