DescriptionAll-Star Squadron #1 p22, cover dated September 1981, it was on sale 3 months prior [June 1981]. Geez, it seems like yesterday that in between games of Astro Invader at my local 7-Eleven, that I purchased the comic. Every page from this issue for me is a grail. The 2nd panel on this page is the first time the All-Star Squadron appears together as a team and that includes the covers and preview issue. The full scoop on All-Star Squadron #1 original art from my research: Some may wonder why the actual penciled and inked pages [not production stat'ed pages] to All-Star Squadron #1 are impossible to find. None were even on CAF until 2011 when I added page #9 to my gallery. In 2013 an additional page was added by another collector, and now this page which I am now adding. As many here know I am a huge All-Star Squad fan. Over the years I have noted anything I have seen in print regarding All-Star Squad #1 interior artwork and have been in correspondence with Roy Thomas, Jerry Ordway and a very short conversation with Rich Buckler at a comic con. We start with Alter Ego v2 #14 p28 April 2002 and a quote from Roy Thomas' interview with Jerry Ordway: [regarding All Star Squadron issue #1] "the first 14 or so pages were lost by FedEx, I [Jerry Ordway] was given poor photocopies to ink over which was done on vellum." It was later brought to light that it was actually 15 total All-Star Squadron #1 pages lost by FedEx, They were page #'s 1-8 and 10-16 In 2005 Roy Thomas confirmed via private email that at least 1/2 the book was lost. I spoke with Rich Buckler about this at NJ comic art show in 2011 but he had no recollection, not surprising given his work on those pages was already finished thus out of the loop by that point. In Sept 2013 I corresponded with Jerry Ordway who stated: "I still wonder to this day if the pencils for pages 1-16 or so of All Star Squadron will ever turn up somewhere." Page 9 pencils as it turned out were not in the lost FedEx shipment and it was inked by Ordway later on with the last 9 pages. My research shows page 9 was probably originally given to Roy Thomas [who got art from most All-Star Squad issues], then given by Roy to his original Alter-Ego Fanzine co-founder, Jerry Bails. In Apr 2002's Alter Ego #14 p28 Jerry Bails was credited as supplying Alter-Ego with the copy of the page 9 original art. I purchased p9 a few years back from Mike Burkey who had obtained that and other art from the Bails estate. Page 9 is the one where the Shining Night is first introduced in the title. The only other penciled+inked art from the first 16 pages of the issue that exists is 1/3 [the middle tier] of page 16. From Jerry Ordway email Sept 2013: "Roy must have asked Buckler to redraw the middle tier for some reason, and there wasn't time to get it to me to ink." I am proud to call that 1/3 page part of my collection. Due to the loss of the 15 pages of pencils, 14 2/3 if you include the p16 middle tier, only 10 1/3 penciled and inked artwork / "real original comic art" for us collectors exist. I have accounted for the exact whereabouts of all 10 1/3 pages and am personally lucky enough to now own the majority of them. So the search is over as sadly only very few still exist. Very Cool & Thanks for the history lesson on the art pages for this issue. I'm a huge All-Star Squadron myself, but current collection is limited to less then 10 pages. Always enjoy popping into your Gallery and looking around. Thanks for posting!!
