Description

By 1952, The Spirit was about done. Will had tired of the series, moved on to another business and in passing the artistic chores to others, readership had started to decline. But, at the urging of Jules Feiffer, he began negotiations with Wally Wood to take over the strip. Wally was excited about the opportunity, but given the low page rates at the time, he was still working at EC. Still, with Feiffer scripting and providing pencil roughs, and Wood handling the finished art, The Spirit headed to the moon.

Of course, to absolutely no one�s surprise, Wood fell behind after two weeks. For the August 17, 1952 story �Heat on the Moon� Eisner had to jump in to cover Wood. There�s also another, less known, reason for the filler story. The newspapers had begun to complain about the artwork. Although Wood was arguably doing some of the best work in his career, the papers were used to Eisner�s style. Will asked Wally to modify his style to match that of Eisner and, also to absolutely no one�s surprise, Wood refused.

This is a page from �Heat on the Moon.� Eisner never thought much of this story. It was rushed, and he worked till two in the morning to get it completed. Still, it�s classic Will. Enjoy!

Eisner's work on The Spirit always excited me. And this page is no exception! I was hooked in that first panel! Congrats on another stellar pick-up!
