Description

This is a very large Conan piece by Bernie Wrightson dated 1973 (it measures about 12" x 13"). Sorry for the glare in the image as the piece was framed and this is a photo. I knew the instant I saw the piece on Albert Moys' site, I had to have it.

The piece was going to be my 25th wedding anniversary gift from my wife. Many payments were made over about 6 months and when the final payment was complete, Albert discovered he could not find the piece. Needless-to-say, I was devastated. As a "consolation", I was able to convince my wife to let me get the "Gulliver of Mars" Frazetta piece from Rob Pistella. Then about 2 months later, Albert called to say he had found the Wrightson! Luckily, I have a very understanding wife who allowed me to get both pieces.

Luckily a CAF member with knowledge of the obscure clued me in to some history about the piece.

In the mid-1970s, Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, produced four (or possibly five) issues of a comic magazine called "Gamut". At the time, the college ran a "Cartooning" course, which was geared towards comic strip and comic book creation. As such, the magazine primarily featured student works spanning fantasy, superhero, and other more traditional genres--as well as a spattering of horror.

The cover artwork was illustrated by professional artists of the day, including Mike Ploog, Will Eisner, and Bernie Wrightson--all of whom were at one time guest lecturers at the college. This piece was used for the cover of Gamut #4.
