Description

Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-23-52 (King Features Syndicate, 1952).
As Val and his young crippled companion Arf sail homeward after nearly drowning, word reaches Princess Aleta that her beloved husband and father to her children has perished. Brave Aleta breaks down in the final panel of this magnificent Sunday, which boasts beautiful images of Val and Arf's boat sailing through choppy water, with majestic mountains in the background, and of Val's guide, stumbling back through the sun-dappled woods.
In this Sunday page we also see Val`s father King Aguar, Katwin, Tillicum, Prince Arn and the twins.
On the fourth panel Val`s singing sword and shield are hanging on the wall.
An extra bonus is the text panel on panel 5 where Aleta mentions both ”Andelcrag” and ”The Gates of Saramand”. Both iconic places in the saga of the norwegian Prince of Thule.
The art is in ink over graphite with red ink key lines on two pieces of Bristol board. The combined image area measures approximately 22.75" x 34". Very few complete Prince Valiant Sunday pages from the year 1952 is kept in private collections ; Hal Foster donated 46 of 52 pages from this particular year to Syracuse University.
