DescriptionBack in the mid-1970s a fellow was on a clean up crew in a newspaper warehouse in Oakland California and they were about to throw into a furnace a dozen Foster's PVs and some Alex Raymond Flash Gordon art. And this partial PV Sunday by Foster was one of them..Luckily all 12 were rescued from the warehouse furnace and later brought to the Berkeley Comic Shop and sold. The artwork : -Absolutely gorgeous super early 2/3 Prince Valiant Sunday, by the incredible Hal Foster. This is Sunday number 102 from January 22nd 1939 and is rightfully called "The Battle". And a battle it is..; Not only a battle at sea – but we are also spectators to the coming battle on the ground, which will become a gamechanger for the life of Prince Valiant.. Prince Valiant participated in many battles through Hal Fosters epic adventure but this Sunday is a milestone, because after this specific battle against the Saxon`s Val was knighted.. Sunday # 102 is therefore the last one where Val was seen only as a humble squire of Sir Gawain. From thereafter the Prince of Thule forever became a knight at the court of King Arthur.. The top tier is missing but that does not make it any less special…glorious fighting action and it even has Val (although you can only see him from behind) in the third panel. The drawing style of Foster is noted for its high level of draftsmanship and attention to detail and this Sunday is no exception. Many thanks goes to Monty Bali for letting me be the next caretaker of this dramatic Sunday.. Created in ink with red ink key lines over graphite on Bristol board, this section of the Sunday measures 26" x 21". It is missing a paste-up on the bottom left, and the "Save This Stamp" Whip Mace on the bottom right is an original art paste-up. There is glue residue in both of these places. The top right has some light staining. Overall the page is in very good condition. From the “Art Wood” collection (“A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators”). Social/Sharing |

Epic scenes leading to war! Foster's artwork makes each panel have a credibility to them like they are part history lesson.

Incredible Sunday. You can see how much this stuff influenced Krenkel, Williamson, Frazetta and so forth. Just beautiful and powerful.
