DescriptionBack when I got this (late 90s?), I asked Doc Dave about the piece, and I recall that he told me that this was a preliminary sketch Frazetta made for the frontispiece for the Edgar Rice Burroughs Ace paperback edition of "The Monster Men," but he said it had to be reconceived with fewer, thicker lines to stand up to the primitive printing process they used in the 60s. The final published version is great, but I really like this earlier concept, too. One aspect of this piece that interested me was that Frazetta employed both of his favorite compositions here: a circular motif and a pyramidal structure. In fact, it looks to me as though he darkened in the right thumb of the caveman in order to strengthen the circular pattern formed by his arms. This appeared in the Frazetta illustrated Conan hardback a few years ago. Thanks for taking a look!Social/Sharing |

Powerful sketch! Love the scratchy lines, they really convey such energy! Very interesting to see such a fine prelim - Frazetta's figurework is superb

How every line, in the aggregate, can just be so perfect is beyond me. To state the obvious, what a genius Fritz was.

Love all these drawings. Pure study of the human figure and movement.
