DescriptionThanks for asking about the back story, Ray, but I don't have too much to tell. I went by Williamson's booth at the San Diego Comicon some time in the late 90s and bought this from the artist's son, who was manning the booth when I happened to come by. The picture was unsigned, so I came back the next day and asked the artist to sign it.He was surprised and a bit suspicious when I produced this drawing of his out of my bag and he asked me where I had gotten it. But he relaxed once I explained that I had bought it from his own booth the day before. It makes me wonder if the drawing was old enough that he didn't recognize it right away, but I don't know when it was drawn. He had several other drawings with the same level of finish for sale, as if they'd all been drawn around the same time. The one I remember best was of a humanoid alien with a lizard head and a ray-gun standing beside a large rock. Just the way he indicated the alien's shadow and the cracks in the rocky background tempted me to buy that other drawing, but I only had cash for one piece at the time so this one won out with this romantic pair preparing for a confrontation. One of those pieces that remind me how much I need a sci-fi Williamson for my collection! I don't think he ever misused a single stroke of his pen. Simply brilliant.

Great artwork, but this is much more than a sketch.... a sketch is the one Al did for me in 1974 when I met him .... he sketched doctor Zarkof while we was waiting a coffee outside a bar... Now the sketch is in my gallery at the voice CELEBRITY SKETCHS...
