DescriptionThis miniseries made a huge impression on me back in the day, so I've been delighted to see OA from this story resurfacing lately. This is the half page splash panel at the bottom of p. 37 of the second book depicting an armored ambulance rocketing towards a future big box store after it was hit by our hero, who was himself propelled by a massive explosion.Darrow created unprecedented scenes of abject violence, oppressive crowding, sexual depravity, and base consumerism in a dystopian future LA peopled by the most mundane and normal looking citizens who have ever appeared in a mainstream Western comic book. Darrow's (and Miller's) Hard Boiled world has plenty of black humor, but none of the romance of Blade Runner, my other favorite fictional dystopia from that general period. So many amusing and/or disturbing details in this one panel: a sign directing motorists stuck in 24 hour logjams to additional parking 2 miles away (and a note on the right to remember to draw that in); a shopper carrying home a 10 foot banana he grabbed at "Behemeth" --- clearly a Costco/Price Club stand-in; armored art deco roadsters; and the naked sleeping homeless visible on the sidewalks. Like Philip K. Dick, Miller and Darrow could see the future a little too clearly way back when. BTW, this is a single panel not because it was broken up later, but because Geof would pencil each panel separately, and then assemble the elements by inking the final page on a large piece of vellum. Kudos to Steve at collect_now for a smooth transaction and great packing! Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

About as close to apocalyptic as you can get. The margin between reality and sci-fi lessens.

Thanks for your comment! I bid on all 3 panels that came up in this recent batch, but only prevailed on this one, myself. I'm not surpised there's some interest in this memorable story, but OA prices have not been buyer-friendly lately!

It's so much fine detail, it's like an Aragonés piece. I love the cow and pig with nuclear eyes. What a great page, and Darrow put so much effort into every bit of it. Very cool find. Congrats!

Immense detail that is technically and perspective sound, Darrow's clean artwork is so thought out and meticulously carried out!

Cars, crowds, perspective. How does he make it look so good? Genius.
