DescriptionThis issue boasts the first appearance of the Jester, for all you Jester fans out there. I bought this directly from the artist and his wife at the San Diego Comicon back in the late 90s. They had lots of Gene's pages laid out on the table, but this page jumped out at me. I didn't have the funds to get one featuring DD at the time, but the many "Colanisms" in this page --- the nuances in the faces, the motion lines on the car, the perspective and gait of the running Jester, the use of shadows, the extreme tilt in a couple of the panels, etc. --- combined with the superb inking job by Adkins, attracted me to this piece. Thanks for taking a look!Social/Sharing |

I love this page for all the reasons you give in the description, and I love your story behind the acquisition. Must have been so cool to meet Gene Colan. 1st appearance of the Jester! Congrats man.

Wow - for Colan to still have such a classic page in the nineties is amazing! First appearance of The Jester is just too cool. Great atmosphere - No one comes close to Gene "The Dean" Colan!

Oh, to have been at the Colans' art-filled table at a late 1990s Comic Con! I think you made a super choice. There is so much interesting story-telling happening on this page. I think Dan Adkins did a great job with the inks here too. Very nice!

Great page, but I love that car panel. Gene was so good with cars.

Colan always stood out from the rest of the bullpen for me. There's something wacky and slightly on the edge with his work, like the contorted mouth on the guy in the first panel, and his treatment of fabrics in motion, always flapping in the wind, conveying action! that made him special to my twelve year old self.

The Jster was a very subversive character and his appearances were always very interesting.

In 2005 at the Orlando Con I shared your experience at the Colan table. What a smorgasbord of great art. Luckily he still had a great many DD pages to choose between.

You already had quite an eye back then: that's a perfect example of Gene's art and style!

This is really special. The Jester panels are incredible, but the whole page is just classic, vintage, Colan. Really missed the boat on this art during my early days of SDCC. Sigh!
