DescriptionJust to round up this very special 2022 on a happy note, here comes this page from a key moment of the Silver Age, special to me for a couple of reasons:- Well, first and foremost, this is John Buscema entering his peak period with the Avengers. Right, he'd been already around for a good dozen issues, but this is the very first one he is joined by Georgie Klein who embelishes Big John's already considerably powerful pencils with a mix of clarity and brilliance unforeseen until then, clearly paving the way for the magic of Tom Palmer and brother Sal Buscema... - Storywise, things are now going to overdrive. The long-serving second fiddle Avengers have now grown into a full-fledged, if slightly dysfuncyional team. It's certainly why, issue after issue, we're met with a constant barrage of unexpected twists and turns, both dazzling and exciting. Case in point, on this very page, the mysterious Crimson Cowl, first revealed as a nameless robot at the end of the previous issue to be immediately replaced by none other than Jarvis (Yes, that Jarvis!) will be revealed again to be that omnious robot who will turn out to be Ultron in his very first appearance (while The Vision, waiting for his cue, will soon enter the stage...). Is what I'm saying confusing? Yes, of course! But try and imagine reading that as a pre-teen half a century ago, so... As an added bonus, this is one of the first full-color Avengers issues I managed to grab in one of my first outings outside France. By then, the very scarcity of the Avengers and their incredibly versatile roaster had grown to mythical proportions for me... Oh, and, as for this page... Have a go at it with your comments, guys, I'm getting too emotional, now... Happy New Year to you all, especially for my friends on CAF! And peace to you all!... Social/Sharing |

Thanks Stephan! It's true that John Buscema can turn third rate baddies into real threats... I mean, look at those distorted faces on the second panel!

This page rewards a second look--there's a lot to discover on it. And Buscema's linework inked by Klein is sublime. Congrats on a superb acquisition!

Thanks Benedict! The added soon-to-be-solved mystery of the Crimson Cowl brings an extra dimension of malevolence to this sequence...

Big John knew how to draw the baddies!
Thanks Mark! I agree with you this is quite impressive, especially when considering that the Masters of Evil essentially regrouped also-rans, here given a new dimension...

Phenomenal early Avengers page by the incomparable John Buscema! And big John's pencils are beautifully enhanced by the smooth, flowing inks of the great George Klein!

Thanks Michael! For me, as well, this was a blessed period for the Avengers. And while many artists with impeessive pedigree brought their own contribution, it's fait to say that John Buscema ruled the show!
