Description**Double Spidey Posts Week 23 of 26***I have been looking forward to this particular week, as I get to showcase two Spectacular Spider-Man covers by the great Sal Buscema. For this cover, it's Spider-Man & Daredevil versus the Evil Villainous Birds!! I am absolutely flummoxed that this cover was not used for this issue. It is one of the most dynamic, most beautifully drawn Sal covers I have ever seen, which is why I was willing to pull the trigger even though it is unpublished. Perhaps (hopefully) it will be utilized someday, though we'll have to wait for another issue that features the specific foursome of Spidey, Daredevil, Owl and Vulture. I have attached a pic of the cover that WAS used, an image that is definitely not as visually arresting, though it did have the intriguing tagline of "The Spectacular Spider-Man IS DYING!!" (Sorry readers, this was not to be until almost 20 years later in Amazing Spider-Man #700). When I first saw this cover on Tri-State, it didn't have the stats. I absolutely loved the image, but I always seemed to have other priorities that needed to be addressed. But months later when I happened to check in, lo and behold, the piece now had stats! I immediately contacted Hans Kosenkranius and worked out a deal right then and there for this cover and a couple Humberto Ramos pieces. I have attached a pic of the cover without the stat overlay as well. Thanks Hans! Social/Sharing |

Such a cool image !! It's weird in that the publisher usually opt in favor of an action oriented cover instead of a "quiet" one (like the published version). It's really reversed here. Loving both version and it looks like you got yourself another fine gem to the crown of a collection that you have.

There is quite a difference in feel between the publ and unpubl covers, involving very different editorial choices. I remember being intrigued by the published comic when it hit the stands, but for 'original art' purposes, give me action any day of the week!!

One of the biggest cliches in comic art collecting for unpublished pieces "I like the one I own better than the published cover!" But in this case it is very applicable. I like the unused cover MUCH better than the static published image. This is also towards end of Sal's run and he still drew fantastic action scenes and was best inking himself. Great piece!

Great piece! You said it, Jason! Don't know what editorial was thinking here! Congrats on a great get, Paul!

I've never gone crazy for "unpublished pieces instead of" Art and I'm not a huge Sal Buscema fan, even though I can't understand why not to use THIS as the cover for the issue as it's absolutely amazing by itself and totally more effective than the one Marvel used. 'Nuff said, Paul!

I agree wholeheartedly, this piece is far superior to the published work. Our pal Sal really does ink himself well. I've also recently learned how well he inks Frenz ;) Congrats on such a great action scene and wonderfully rendered work!
