Description

A very rare painting by Jack 'First Kingdom' Katz.

Jack Katz (b. 1927, USA).
An important example of post-war American expressionism from a great Comic Book / Graphic Novel Artist.

Painting on canvas, 40.5 cm x 30.5 cm, signed by Jack Katz with tiny letters in the lower right corner. On the back some sketches and Jack's Brighton Beach address: 944 Brighton 4 st. Brooklyn. A very rare example (and only 1 of 4 or so painted in this style) that Jack painted while seeking work as an illustrator in his early days. He was influenced by the German expressionists, and in this painting, especially George Grosz.

According to Katz specialist Ted Jalbert, the Katz painting is called "Escape". In the upper center area is a small artist figure in a white shirt which is Jack Katz himself. According to Jack Katz the painting was done circa 1962.
