DescriptionMore Vintage Thundra!Something totally unexpected happened last week. A piece of original comic art to which I've never seen before turned up on a forum and its owner was seeking help to identify where said art was published. My heart smiled when I saw it. I knew it had to be from that SPIDEY SUPER STORIES tale published in the March 1977 issue of THE ELECTRIC COMPANY, a children's magazine that saw limited availability (only in schools?). I haven't been able to find a copy of that particular issue in any condition for several years. Rare as hen's teeth, I guess? The story ("Thundra on the Tracks!") was only 4 or 5 pages long and was never reprinted, both according to research by a longtime Spider-Man fan. Upon seeing it for the very first time, I felt very...nostalgic. Indirect nostalgia? Doesn't matter. It's vintage Thundra, my all-time favorite gal in comics, presented in prominent and favorable fashion (don't mind the hokeyness, remember it's geared towards children) and I have to have that piece! Ohh, I'm writing too much here...ok, deal made quickly and art received quickly. :) Further research confirmed that said story was written by Len Wein and pencilled by Sal Buscema. Mike Esposito most likely inked it. The story also featured the very first meeting between Spider-Man and Thundra, in or out of continuity (have they ever met in continuity?). Pre-dates SPIDEY SUPER STORIES #24, which has the other Spider-Man/Thundra tale, by a few months. Pretty cool, eh? For clarity's sake, SPIDEY SUPER STORIES were both a standalone comic book series and a feaure in most, but not all, issues of THE ELECTRIC COMPANY. Someone really needs to put together and publish a complete collection of SSS tales found in those magazines because most such tales were never reprinted and still unknown to most comic book fans. I'm just beyond thrilled to have ended up with this piece and very fortune that it resurfaced while I can still see. The seller, not a collector at all, said its previous owners have had it on a wall at a three-story pigeon coop for decades. Yes, a PIGEON COOP! Converted from an old barn. What once belonged to generations of racing pigeons is now all miiiine! Many thanks go to Brian Peck who brought that forum thread to my attention. He basically found all of what I currently own in this hobby and he has my eternal gratitude for that. Happy collecting! Larger scan: HERE Social/Sharing |

A very nice bonus that it's by Sal Buscema to have more of that classic Marvel charm! That fourth panel pouncing Spidey image is something cool! Probably some other collector trying to pounce on this page and getting thrown aside!
