Description

I like everything Brubaker and Phillips do, but Criminal is my favorite. Here's the 1st panel from page 2 (the first story page) of issue 9, the 4th book in the Lawless story arc. For some reason, this image really haunted me after I read these books. It's pretty low key, but for me it's the iconic image from the series and I finally broke down and picked it up from Mark at splashpageart.com. As it happens, Phillips drew this panel on a different board from the rest of the panels, which formed a memory sequence done in ball point pen (photo below). By my count, this page boasts the 3rd in-panel appearance of Teeg, Tracy's father, who is my favorite character in the Criminal universe. I'm looking forward to more crime comics from these creators! I can see why this panel inspires you. Everything comes together here in a very elegant and evocative way. It's seldom that an image can translate an atmosphere and mood this flawlessly!
